Rosling ripples

Monday, October 29th, 2007

ripple is all about new ways of thinking about things. That means that you, the rippler, are an innovator. But not just any old innovator….an innovator who cares.

For that reason we thought you might be interested in this speech from TED. It’s pretty challenging and helps to think about poverty in a new way.

Facebook application press coverage

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Earlier this year facebook released an open API and allowed third party developers to put together applications for their platform.

ripple grabbed the opportunity and took our idea for a facebook app to a developer we know called Hafeez Bana. Hafeez really ‘got’ the idea and with the design help of evolution7 built the best application on facebook……………….. iripple. We’d like to commend him again on his outstanding dedication to rippleness.

Hafeez and a wall

Check out this article in The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald about the ripple facebook app and Hafeez’s ideas about facebook development.

ripple in Africa

Friday, October 19th, 2007

One of the ripple team, Simon Griffiths, has been working on ripple from Africa for the last 4 months. Here’s the latest from him and his laptop…

My trip began on tour with MTV, Bliss ‘n Eso and Evermore in South Africa as part of the Oaktree Foundation’s Schools 4 Schools (S4S) project. The basic aim of the tour was to create awareness about S4S in Australia by documenting the cultural journey of Evermore and Bliss ‘n Eso in South Africa.

What an incredible experience! Bliss ‘n Eso ended up writing their latest single, Bullet and a Target, on tour and filmed the video clip on location with MTV. All profits from the song, which you can hear on their MySpace page, will support the Oaktree Foundation. These guys are great and I’ve got a lot of respect for what they’ve done and what they’re planning to do in South Africa.

Once the 10-day tour finished, it was down to the nitty gritty of getting S4S set-up in Africa. The program itself is doing some really cool stuff – linking schools in Australia with those in the developing world to provide much needed life skills and leadership training. On top of that, S4S facilitates online communication between students, opening the minds of kids to what it’s like in other parts of the world. It’s pen pals of the 21st century. There’s lots more information at www.schools4schools.org – it’s well worth looking at.

After spending 3 months with S4S, I flew up to Nairobi to begin a 10 week trip on public transport back to South Africa. I wanted to learn more about Eastern and Southern Africa as well as research new organisations for ripple 2.0 – and what better way to do it than overland! The trip so far has taken me through Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda on some terrible buses and trains.

I even got stuck in a tiny town and had to hike 13km through the rainforest with an army escort as protection from the nearby Congolese rebels. I’m now about to head over to Arusha in Tanzania and then continue south through Malawi and Mozambique to Jo’burg. It’s been an incredible experience so far and I can’t wait for what’s to come. If anyone reading this is thinking about travelling to Africa, I say do it. The parts of this continent I have seen so far have been incredible. There’s some really inspirational stuff going on and it’s a lot of fun…
